Online Shopping – Local Supermarkets

Save time by getting your grocery shopping done online. There are few large supermarket brands in Malta which offer an online shopping service with flexible delivery times spanning to the evenings and weekends. You may also opt for the “pick up from store” if you don’t have time to wait around for a delivery slot. In this way, all your items are prepared for you and await your collection, hassle free, since most of these supermarkets also have a car park.

I started shopping for my groceries online in 2011 when I was living in London. I did not drive there so it was very convenient to get the heavy shopping delivered to my doorstep. When I returned to Malta, I continued doing the same, just because it is so comfortable, especially for getting the heavy items such as tinned food, beverages, washing liquids and detergents, pet food, frozen food etc.

I still visit the supermarket for the daily essentials like milk, bread and some other items which I prefer to see and choose myself. Whilst i’m at it, I make it a point to try and help save on single use plastics. At Greens you can “Bring Your Own Container (BYOC)” for fish, meat & poultry. When it comes to vegetables you can also use the netted bags Veggie Bags by Veco, I purchased mine from Greens but you can also buy them online here.

Veco Veggie Bag

Veco was set up by two Maltese entrepreneurs determined to help fight this war on plastic “one bag at a time”.

The Veco Veggie bag is made out of 100% recycled plastic and is perfect for  containing your veggies when you are grocery shopping. If you don’t already own a Veco veggie bag, then please invest in this and do your bit to help save the environment against the impact of single-use plastics. Every little helps.

The blue small bag you see in the photo fits perfectly into your handbag and contains 5 mesh bags inside which you can easily pull out and use for your veggies.

You can buy this Veco Veggie bag online

Malta Supermarket Online Shopping Tips

Unfortunately the user experience on many online supermarket shopping sites is rather crappy. With time, they can and will improve, however in the meantime here are some tips:

Keep your search short: Lets say you want to order Rio Mare Tuna 160g but when you type in “Rio Mare Tuna” and submit your search no results are found. This means you need to try again but this time keep your search short and sweet with just “Rio Mare”. Of course all there products will come so then you need to be patient and filter through the items until you find what you want. I tend to run a search on the page so it highlights what i’m looking for. This happens often when you are searching for items with an apostrophe s like “Hellman’s” because people tend to just type in “Hellmans” so in cases such as these I suggest, keep it short and search for “Hellm”

Images: When you are shopping at online supermarkets DO NOT expect to find images for everything! Far from it. Many items don’t have an image so you would need to end up typing in the product name/description with no image into google and checking out the image there, just to remind yourself if it is the correct item you are looking for or not.

Re-ordering: Some websites allow you to re-order your previous order at the click of a button. This option is super handy because there will be items which need to be re-ordered, basic cleaning products, toiletries, canned food, beverages etc.

Keep your shopping list handy: I find that having a weekly menu helps me to form a list and stick to buying what I need thus, avoiding waste.
