Ralph Lauren Spring/ Summer 2019

Celestial music begins; the models glide down the white marble staircase of the brand’s own flagship coffee shop, “Ralph’s Coffee” in Madison Avenue, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. With its gorgeously chic décor that oscillates between la belle epoque and art nouveau, containing dashes of art deco, the venue provides nothing short of the perfect hosting spot for his spring/ summer 2019 collection.

Lauren’s assortment of outfits commences with clothes that do more than just nod in the direction of naval officer glamour, with a commanding presence, if you’ll excuse the pun – broad, embellished shoulders and long, straight, classic lines. White is the predominant colour early on in the show, set against black, with huge patent ebony handbags and gold accessories in the form of hanging-leaf earrings and belt buckles. Palazzo pants contribute to that air of effortless panache, infinitely versatile and wearable as they are. The metallic element starts to become a driving force and takes centre stage a little later on in the show, with fabulous eighties disco-inspired horizontal black-and-gold stripes, using glamorous wedges and chunky heels to set the evening wear off. And we are talking of full-on, super-bright yellow gold here, rather than an antique or rose gold shade. Trousers graduate to styles which come gathered at the waist, dropping straight down to the ground, for forms that are high-glitz but not overly tight. Jackets range from slightly loose to short and fitted, all in an effervescent, luminous gold. Black cigarette trousers endowed with gold piping propose a more subtle alternative to long black chiffon skirts and pants which look as if they have been dipped into the precious melted metal. One of the show’s most sophisticated looks consists of leather harem pants teamed with a high-necked sheer black chiffon blouse, with the ubiquitous gold present in accessories highlighting the ensemble. For those enamoured of sparkle but perhaps less willing to show flesh, v-neck jumpers and light cable sweaters decorated with black sequins or coloured gold are an intriguing option – think polo or cricket attire gone nightclub. For a more masculine edge, a mini waistcoat sits atop black palazzo pants and a severe black jacket, high-heeled gold court shoes adding a dash of vitality to the look. Jumpsuits in both stunning black and pristine white continue the feel of minimalistic allure. Another fascinating look constitutes a matching black chiffon dress and jacket, both adorned with a large white floral print and complemented by wonderful thick-heeled t-bar monochrome shoes, which usher in a number of tops and trousers with the same print. The last few evening looks are positively drenched in glistening refinement, combining gold pleated skirts with a decolleté and glittering three-quarter dresses with spaghetti straps.  Evening bags are of a small clutch size, consistently either black or gold. Some party pieces present a cross between a cocktail dress and an understated prom dress, with a bandeau neckline, slightly full skirt and baroque design, the latter of which is also extended to cigarette pants and matching jackets. Full-length slimline lame dresses and a black silk gown complete with bright gold cape end Lauren’s spring-summer odyssey of glamour. Certainly not for those who shy away from the gleamingly brilliant, this collection can, yet, be termed somewhat versatile, if what you are you looking for is timeless elegance.
